Over the course of just two days, our new group of student designers and their amazing teacher, Anna Golden, created an ephemeral parklet with an underwater theme, to help raise awareness about the impact of global climate change on sea levels around the world, in particular the vulnerability of our coastal city. In this photo, Andre is creating a bottle that depicts the city of Boston's skyline. He later filled the vessel up with water... Check it out in the slideshow below.
What did we use to build our temporary parklet? We used recycled materials from Save that Stuff, an awesome local recycling company. The folks at Save that Stuff also donated oyster shells from The Oyster Project which the students used in their furniture design.
| We also collaborated with Rising Tides, a local art project that draws attention to sea level rise through art installations around the city. Artist, Susan Israel, lent us Rising Tides Fish and helped us figure out the estimated storm surge, high tides and sea level, to share with the public. |
The students engaged artfully - through designing and building this temporary space - and civically - through brave conversations with passersby about climate change, rising tides and our hope to make a positive impact by building a parklet this school year.
