The Parkolation Project is an educational program of VSA Massachusetts COOL Schools. Parkolation gets young people involved in real world creative problem solving through designing and building innovative public spaces. This placemaking exploration gets students involved in civic, environmental and community engagement through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math). Read our blog to learn more.

Parklet has new home, as Outdoor Classroom!

Picture
This year's Parkolation students "remixed last year's parklet into an outdoor classroom at Boston Green Academy. It was a hard decision not to re-install the parklet in the street, but due to the cost of installation/de-installation, the logistics of storing the parklet in the winter and the school's desire for an outdoor learning space, we decided to give the parklet a new, permanent, home.

Want to see our 2014 Parkolation Parklet build in just 2 minutes? Check out this amazing Time Lapse by Michelle Chung:

Because of YOU, our students parklet dreams are now a reality!

On June 25, a tremendous team of high school students, architecture students, grandmothers, little brothers, volunteers, neighbors, friends and organizations worked dawn to dusk to put all the component pieces of our parklet together.  In the evening, friends, family and community members gathered for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate everyone's hard work.

Our parklet is now finished and open to  the public!
Come PARK HERE and reimagine public space!

Where? 506 Park Drive, Boston - in front of Mei Mei Restaurant
How long is it up? Until November 30, 2014 when we'll de-install it and store it for the winter months

See more on our blog.

Through VSA Massachusetts' COOL Schools Program, high school students at Boston Green Academy are dreaming, designing, planing and building a real parklet in Boston, by working with Teaching Artist, Wilhelmina Peragine, students in the Gateway Initiative at Boston Architectural College, Copley Wolff Landscape Architect, Cortney Kirk, and a number of other volunteers and experts. This work involves many 21st century skills such as:
  • Civic Engagement - listening and presenting to community members, business owners and city government officials
  • Collaboration - working together with their peers and real world experts
  • Creative Thinking  and Problem Solving - engaging in the challenges of design through iterative thinking and making

In addition to the generous support of individuals, like you, the Parkolation Project
has received funding from
these fantastic organizations:

The Boston Foundation for Architecture grant - $ 3,000

The Boston Foundation - Vision Fund Grant - $7,500

The BPS Arts Expansion Initiative helped make this project possible through their funding of VSA MA's COOL Schools Program
